Residue removal

Soot & smoke residue cleaning

Soot is not one substance. Fast-burning synthetics leave a dry, smeary residue; smouldering timber leaves oily films; and a protein fire, food burnt on a stovetop, leaves a near-invisible varnish with a penetrating smell. Each behaves differently, and each keeps chemically attacking metal, stone and glass until it is neutralised and removed with the correct method.

Scope

What this covers

  • Residue typing before any cleaning, since the wrong method sets stains permanently

  • Dry-sponge and chemical-sponge cleaning of walls and ceilings

  • Degreasing of protein-fire films in kitchens and adjoining rooms

  • Corrosion control on metals, appliances and fixtures attacked by acidic soot

  • HEPA vacuuming of settled particulate through every affected zone

Timing

When it's needed

Cleaning is time-critical: within days, acidic residues pit chrome, etch glass and yellow plastics beyond recovery. Rooms far from the fire carry residue wherever smoke pressure reached: smell is an unreliable guide, and wipe sampling shows the true spread.

Do not re-enter a fire-damaged building until emergency services have released it and power and gas are confirmed isolated. Soot is a lung irritant, charred structures fail without warning, and disturbed asbestos is invisible: when in doubt, stay out.

Quote variables

What shapes the scope

Fire recovery crosses several regulated trades: building work above the NSW contract threshold needs a contractor licence, electrical and plumbing making-good need their own licences, and asbestos removal beyond minor quantities requires a SafeWork NSW licensed removalist. Ask who holds which licence for which stage, and verify each on the relevant public register.
